Comments:
I am from Edmonton, Alberta and am a Principal at Sierra Systems. I have been working in BI/DW for about 10 years.

I have been angsting of late about the current rate of change in the BI space and how best to serve my clients. I recently built a data mart with 6 dimensions and 2 fact tables in about 40 hours. The interface was a simple Excel pivot table front end but was leap years ahead of what they had been doing.

My point is that the mature BI technology stack (SQL Server 2005)facilitated a quick and effective implementation. My angst is trying to confirm where I go next. I grew up a developer but today's world of mashups, takeovers, standards posturing, and an inability to wrap my head around the user culture has got me wondering what to do next. Your webcast on future BI architectures only validated my angst.

Is open source the way? I am not convinced. I believe open source, the concept, will be pushed down to the lowest common denominator; the user. However, I believe that open source will be built and implemented using tools that are built and implemented by leaders already in the space. Yes, they could be open source but Microsoft, Oracle, SAS, BO, and like are firmly entrenched to take over the technical and mind space of the user.
